How-To: Have a Frugal Vacation

How-To: Have a Frugal Vacation

Spring is a great time to travel and you can find a lot of great deals before the summer hot season begins in June. A good vacation starts with good planning.

  • Rent a vacation home rather than booking multiple hotel rooms or suites for a larger group. Many vacation homes offer prime locations at a fair price. Plus, they make it easier to round everyone up and gives a cozier experience to vacationing.
  • Purchase entertainment, transportation, admission tickets and other options ahead of time to stay on budget and to save time. You can find deals, especially when purchasing for a group, and have the ease of mind in making all the arrangements in advance.
  • Bring a movie! You can keep the kids entertained while you relax by bringing a movie and popping it into the DVD player for quiet downtime.

Restaurant.com Gift Certificates: $25 for $2… What’s the Catch?

Restaurant.com Weekly Promo Offer 300 x 250

Use Coupon Code: MEAL. *Offer Expires 4/30/10.

I was rather curious about the online deal we posted that entitles the customer a
$25 Gift Certificate for $2 w/ Coupon Code: MEAL
*.  After reading the fine print, I decided it was a good deal based on the following:

  • Dinner for Two would normally cost around $30 for two which includes tax and gratuity at a moderately priced restaurant.
  • The minimum purchase for a $25 gift certificate is $35 which gives room to order an extra appetizer or dessert.
  • Looking at the restaurant menu ahead of time allows me to plan exactly what I can order to meet the minimum purchase without going overboard.

I picked a local Italian restaurant that I had actually been to before. We went on a Friday night and got seated immediately without any reservations.

  • Total bill was: $16.50 (entree) + $14.75 (entree) + $6.95 (dessert) = $38.20 subtotal / $48.42 total (gratuity + tax)
  • Total Paid: $2 (Restaurant.com Promotion) + $23.42 (difference in the bill) = $25.42 (47.5% off your total bill!!!)

I almost paid half for a 2-person meal with dessert at a nice Italian Restaurant.

To find your favorite restaurant, visit Restaurant.com. You have until April 30 to purchase $25 certificates for $2, but your certificate won’t expire for an entire year! Remember to enter Coupon Code: MEAL* at checkout.

How To: Have a Cheap (but fun!) Date

How To: Have a Cheap (but fun!) Date

Being a cheap date doesn’t have to synonymous with being a bad date. There is plenty to do on the cheap and maybe you can even impress your guy or gal with some creative ways to have fun without spending a lot of dough.

  • Spend an afternoon at a Garage Sale or Estate Sale – You can really get to know someone by going through someone else’s stuff.  You can challenge your date to find something special under $5 to exchange as gifts. Not only would your gifts be unique, but they will also represent a special moment for you and your date.
  • Buy Groceries and Make Lunch/Dinner – Cooking at home is always cheaper than eating out and you get to show off your kitchen talents. Even if you’re not so impressive in the kitchen, there are easy recipes available online and you can find something to make based on what ingredients you have in the kitchen at SuperCook.com.
  • Learn to Dance! – A night out at a club usually means an exuberant cover charge, and you also have to deal with crowds, expensive drinks, and some embarrassment if you’re not doing so hot on the dance floor. Why not learn some new moves so you can really rock the dance floor together?
