Pet of the Week: A cat named Atlanta in San Diego

Most of us here at PennySaverUSA.com have pets and are huge pet fans. We’re also big supporters of pet adoption. As a result, we’ve decided to launch a new blog feature in conjunction with local Humane Societies called Pet of the Week.

Each Wednesday we will spotlight a new pet up for adoption from one of the local Humane Societies and share a story from one of our readers about their personal experience with pet adoption.

atlanta

Kicking off our Pet of the Week feature is Atlanta, pictured on the right. Here is the full description from the San Diego Humane Society:

Atlanta is a gorgeous kitty hoping to find a special family and home to cherish. With bright eyes and an eclectic spirit, she enjoys playing with feather toys, sunbathing and watching birds flutter outside her window.

While Atlanta enjoys spending time with her people friends, she is also very comfortable spending time on her own.  Atlanta has a kitten-nature and is very curious and fun-loving.  She will do well in a variety of homes.  For the Fall into Love with a Furry Friend promotion, from September 6th through October 31st of 2011, her adoption fee is $25 and includes her spay, current vaccinations, permanent microchip identification, and a certificate for a free veterinary exam!

Atlanta is available for adoption at the North Campus of the San Diego Humane Society:

cujo

Now it’s time to share a touching story from one of our PennySaverUSA Twitter followers, Sandy (reach her @ @SLN319), who adopted an adorable dog several years ago. Here is her story (her pup’s picture is on the right):

My dog means a lot to me. His name is Cujo (because I just love horror movies). I decided to adopt him because I wanted a small dog as well as a new friend to the family. Dogs love you unconditionally and they give you much joy and happiness everyday.  The benefits of pet adoption is to save a life — your pet will be healthy because most dogs are neutered and all are vaccinated.  You’ll also save money as adoption is inexpensive and there’s a wide selection of animals to choose from. I highly recommend it! Cujo has been a beloved part of our family for eight years now.

To have your adopted pet story featured in Pet of the Week, please leave your story as a blog comment, tweet us, Facebook us or email us. Thank you.

More PennySaver Memories

As many of you know, especially our California readers, PennySaver is a brand that has been a part of millions of lives for 48 years and is in over 700 local editions and mailed to 95% of the residents in California. And because of this, there are a great deal of stories that we hear from our readers about how the PennySaver shaped their life. We want to share a few of these every week with you here on our PennySaverUSA.com blog.

Every time the PennySaver would come, my dad would circle all the garage sales he wanted to go to. My dad and I were avid garage sales attendees and went every Saturday. My dad has passed away now. I miss those circles and I miss my dad. -Long Beach, CA

After my dearest friend and neighbor’s dog died, her daughter got her a new pup from the Orange County Animal Shelter. Muffin was a graduate of the prestigious ‘prison pup program’ that teaches inmates compassion and life skills. Muffin also has regular grooming sessions at Pet Hospital in Orange. Was I ever surprised to see the most well-behaved, glamorous dog in the neighborhood on the cover of the Pennysaver in one of Dr. Wiatt’s ads. It made Muffin’s mommy so proud. -Orange, CA

The best penny saver memory will be the time I won two tickets for the Medieval Times show. I had never won anything in my life so, as you may imagine, I was jumping up an down when I recieved the tickets through mail. -Los Angeles, CA

My favorite PennySaver memory shall forever be imprinted in my heart. It was in January , 2000 when I was browsing through the animal/pets classified section of the PennySaver. My daughter and I had been thinking about getting a companion for our then 3 yr. old German Shepherd, Bullet. The ad was for German Shepherd puppies. We went to check it out. Lo and behold, we arrived at the nick of time. There was only one very shy puppy left, just meant for us! We named her Heidi. She became a wonderful companion to Bullet and a devoted, loving, family member. She passed away a few years ago and there isn’t a day we don’t think about Heidi. If it wouldn’t have been for the PennySaver, we would never have found our priceless gift. Thank you, PennySaver! Redondo Beach-CA

Protect the four-legged members of your family this Spring

Protect the four-legged members of your family this Spring

Here at PennySaverUSA.com, we are animal lovers. Any pet owner can tell you what a nightmare it may be if your pet gets fleas. It is even worse when your pet develops an allergic reaction to fleas, making bites even more miserable. In addition to allergic reactions, both fleas and ticks may lay eggs and you may be battling an infestation for months ahead, not to mention other diseases.

Spring is the time to beef up those preventive measures. First thing you should do is to take your pet to the vet! Make sure your pet is up to date with all annual vaccinations. You can also ask your veterinarian about topical medication to repel and kill fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

Although these are safe when prescribed by a licensed veterinarian and used properly, some ingredients inside the topical product may not be safe for long-term use or exposure. Read the ingredients carefully and ask your vet if you have any questions regarding both animal and human health effects.

Home preventive measures will also help keep your pet comfortable and free of any parasites that can harm both your pet and your family.

  • Checking for Fleas – Check out this video by Dr. Mike from VetVid who teaches you how to check for fleas so you can ensure your pet is safe and clean.
  • Housecleaning – Clean your carpets, curtains, bedding, and everything to help eliminate any eggs or hiding fleas.
  • Homeopathic Treatments – Scented oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, cedar, and citrus can be diluted with water to repel fleas from bedding while making your home smell fresh.
