Mother’s Day Memories: Antique Furniture

Every day this week, a staffer will share a story about how an item available on PennySaverUSA.com reminds him/her of mom with Mother’s Day this Sunday. This story follows and is from PennySaverUSA.com staffer Alisha.

When I grew up, before I would fall asleep, I would stare at my antique oak headboard with wonderment. Looking at the wood’s knots, I would use my imagination to see patterns, like a mouse or smiley face staring back at me. Even as an adult when I would go to my childhood home, I would trace each outline with my finger. Unfortunately, this fondness for my antique bed wasn’t always the case.

This is an example of Alisha's mom's antiques.

When I was a kid, I begged my mom for a bedroom like Sabrina’s from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and my mom would always say that I would appreciate one-of-the-kind antique furniture when I got older, just wait. And like always, mom was right.

I love antiques, especially since my parent’s home is covered from top to bottom in pieces that are truly unique. I always teased that all I would have to do is put up a sign and open the doors to the public to get a museum started. That’s why when I came across this antique Hummel Music Box from a PennySaverUSA seller in Sacramento, I was immediately flooded with thoughts of my mom who would adore this piece for her collection. Shelves dedicated to Hummel figurines, this music box would entertain fellow brother and sister figurines as they played in the rain, herded sheep, and much more.

Just some history for you, the Hummel figurine originated from popular postcards in Germany and Switzerland during the 1930′s. It wasn’t until Franz Goebel turned the drawings into porcelain figurines that these adorable boy and girls became a collector’s item. And this Mother’s Day, I just know a Hummel figurine is itching to be a part of your home.

Does your mom love antiques?

  1. She can’t live without them!
  2. She has a few pieces
  3. She considers them garbage

Mother’s Day Memories: Collectible Dolls

Every day this week, a staffer will share a story about how an item available on PennySaverUSA.com reminds him/her of mom with Mother’s Day this Sunday. The first story follows and is from PennySaverUSA.com staffer Elizabeth.

I’ve been thinking about my mom a lot lately, especially with all the garage sale tips we’ve been sharing and vintage items we’ve featured in Steals of the Week. My mom is an avid vintage treasure hunter, and growing up, I spent almost every weekend scouring yard sales and estate sales for antiques.

Find collectible dolls like the one above by searching through PennySaverUSA.com.

As a child, I found this boring with extra o’s, but as an adult I’ve become incredibly grateful for everything she taught me and developed my own passion for these thrifty treasure hunts.

With Mother’s Day coming up, I’ve been keeping close tabs on PennySaverUSA.com’s antiques and collectibles listings because there are always amazing vintage goodies hanging out in there that I know she would go ga-ga for.

Her biggest weakness was collectible dolls like this Princess Diana doll I found on PennySaverUSA.com. If there was an collectible doll at a yard sale or estate sale, she picked it up, had it repaired and cleaned, and brought it into the huge family of dolls that took residence in our house. I absolutely loved this as a little girl because it felt like she was bringing these friends home just for me, even if I could only play with them under her watchful eye.

In recent years, many of these dolls have gone to antique buyers, but I know she still has a soft spot for them. What do you think? What are you getting your mom for Mother’s Day?

We hope the PennySaver can help you find something perfect, just for her.

PennySaverUSA Goes Vintage Treasure Hunting at the Long Beach Antique Market

PennySaverUSA staffer Elizabeth took a trip to the Long Beach Antique Market over the weekend. She shares her experience here …

Growing up on a steady staple of garage sales, estate sales, and flea markets, I live for the thrill of the thrift. On weekends, I can frequently be spotted perusing the aisles of Goodwill and the tables and blankets of local yard sales in search of vintage clothes and home décor. Needless to say, ever since I heard about the over 800 antique, vintage, and collectible sellers who flock to Long Beach Antique Market once a month, I have been dying to go.

I finally got my chance this past weekend. Armed with a scavenger hunt list from PennySaverUSA Facebook fans (thanks!) and my mother-in-law and husband in tow, I walked miles of Long Beach Antique Market’s glorious rows of vintage and antique booths. At first, it was extremely overwhelming because there are hundreds of jam-packed booths with really cool stuff.  It’s hard to resist the temptation to linger on each vintage find. Luckily, my scavenger hunt list kept us on track.

Let us know which item from Elizabeth’s adventure above interested you most.

As we hunted down adorable dog and monkey figurines, Howdy Doody toys, and anything wedding related (for engaged coworker Alisha), I also got to meet some of the incredible faces behind vintage selling,  like vintage furniture re-purposer Quirks By Annie . The best part of the experience was hearing each vendor’s stories, like the guy who found a $4,000 parrot sculpture by famed artist Sergio Bustamante at a yard sale or the vendor who tracks down treasures each weekend using PennySaverUSA’s garage sale classifieds.

But a girl cannot live on scavenger hunts alone. I managed to take home a very impressive thrift haul for under $150 that included a blue 70s disco dress for $14, handmade stone jewelry by awesome designer Creativeego for $15, and the crème de la crème, a teal full-size cello for only $90.

Long Beach Antique Market

Elizabeth made new friends with Annie from Quirks By Annie.

I’m giddy about my vintage shopping experience at the Long Beach Antique Market and can’t wait to return.  I also took a few tips away from it that I hope you can use, as well.

  1. Make a list of what you are searching for. This will keep you from getting mired down in the abundance of vintage at each table.
  2. Take photos. There were so many cool things that I wanted to study longer. Taking photos helped me not feel so bad about moving on because I’ll be able to refer to them later.
  3. Keep a cash budget. I could have easily spent more than I can afford, so I took only cash to keep me from being tempted to go outside my limits. Also, most vendors only accept cash.

Hope you’ll enjoy The Long Beach Antique Market as much as I did. Do you have any favorite vintage or antique haunts? Tell us with a comment below.

Vintage Steals of the Week!

It’s time for some Steals of the Week, folks! Every Wednesday, we explore the wonderful world of classified ads on PennySaverUSA.com and see what kind of amazing deals we can come up with for our loyal blog readers. Today, we want to show you a collection of vintage and antique items that have been posted recently.

In the age of iPads and laptops small enough to hid in your pocket,  the memory of the manual typewriter might just be lost to the ages. We found this Royal Quiet De Lux Typewriter in Lincoln Heights, CA being sold for $200. How great it would be to have this piece of history in your home.

Sitting out on the porch on an autumn evening and relaxing in your very own rocking chair sounds about as good as it gets to us. This Grandfather Rocking Chair in Severn, MD is estimated by the seller to be from the late 1800s. The chair has an illustration of a man and woman on the back surrounded by beads. What a beautiful addition this could be for your home or porch. It is being sold for $180.

This Baby Buggy from the 1930s is like something that we will only see these days on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. It is a Mahr Bufton Motoride Model 1640-k and is an iconic image from a day long past.

All of these items can be found by going to the Antiques and Collectibles section in merchandise. Try it out for yourself, you never know what you might find!
