Pet of the Week: Big Mama needs a loving home

We might be a few months away from Mother’s Day, but that doesn’t mean moms don’t still deserve recognition – or at least a home! The latest Pet of the Week honoree, Big Mama (pictured on the right), has earned a place to live.

Big Mama belongs in a home, not a shelter.

Why is she called Big Mama? Not because of her size, but because she has a huge heart overflowing with love! Even though she’s had puppies, those days are gone. She’s ready to kick up her paws and enjoy life as a free-wheeling, family dog. Mama is a 3-1/2 year old, 60 pound, spayed, female, Hound / Boxer mix.

“Mama” was transferred to Rancho Coastal Humane Society through the FOCAS program. She’s mellow and willing to do whatever her new family wants. That includes running, meeting new dogs at the dog park or beach, or just kicking back on the couch. As long as she has someone to love, and someone who loves her, Mama will be a happy dog.

The $125 adoption fee for “Big Mama” includes medical exam, spay, up to date vaccinations, and microchip identification.

@davisesq212 and flip are an inseparable pair.

I had been searching for a kitten to adopt for some time and was in Connecticut antiquing for the day when my mom and I spotted a small animal shelter on a country road.  In actuality, the shelter was merely a trailer. There were only about 15 cages, all stacked on top of one another.  In the very last cage of the row on the top was where Flip was.  She was only 4 lbs, partially shaved and cowering back in the cage, sacred as can be. I asked to meet her and Flip took to me immediately. I fell in love.

However, I was really hoping to adopt a kitten. I had never adopted any animal before and was nervous about adopting a cat that might have behavioral ‘issues’. Flip was gorgeous, loving and affectionate but I was scared (just like Flip was). I left that day and told them that I would think about Flip and let them know. Well, I sure did think about Flip! I called the shelter every single day, sometimes twice a day, asking if anyone adopted Flip. Finally, they told me that if I did not come to adopt her, they were bringing her to a local pet store so someone could adopt her. My heart sank. I cried.

The next day, my mom and I raced back to Bethany CT and I adopted Flip.  It was the best day of my life.

Flip is now 11.5 pounds and has gorgeous long hair with stunning blue eyes. She is so loving, friendly and mellow. She has a sister, Stinky (adopted from petfinder.com) and they adore each other.  Flip has been with me close to 13 years and when I adopted her, they estimated her to be 2-3 years old. Flip has begun to show some signs of arthritis and lost a couple of teeth recently but otherwise, she is in great health.

Flip, Stinky and I snuggle all the time and I cannot wait to continue loving both my girls.

Everyone should adopt a shelter animal. They give back so much love and affection and never ask for anything in return.
